BJP ministers to see protests from June 18

Panaji : Post June 18, the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) will hold demonstrations at all public meetings being attended by ministers of the state BJP government, BBSM members declared on Wednesday.
The only BJP leaders who will be spared are Union Ayush minister Shripad Naik, state environment minister Rajendra Arlekar and St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh, BBSM convenor Subhash Velingkar, who is also state RSS chief, said.
Velingkar said Naik, Arlekar and Wagh would not be targeted as they have come out openly in support of BBSM's demand for state grants only to Konkani- or Marathi-medium primary schools.
"Our protest will now enter a decisive phase as the state BJP government has not honoured our ultimatum of withdrawing grants to English-medium primary schools before the new academic year began on June 6. On June 18 we will hold token hunger strikes in 19 places across the state. At each spot we expect 3,000 to 3,500 supporters of our cause. Post June 18, our boycott of state events and demonstrations at such state functions will begin," said Velingkar.
BBSM leader Uday Bhembre said that ministers Naik and Arlekar and MLA Wagh have come out "openly and boldly to support the same principles that drive the BBSM movement despite the state government's stand which is to the contrary".
"We understand their limitations, that in a democracy they cannot go any further. If any other minister also openly comes out in support of our demand, we will not hold demonstrations at events they are present at as well," said Bhembre.
