3 schools closed down in Canacona

CANACONA: Three government primary schools, including a lone Konkani medium one, have been closed town this academic year due to lack of students, in Canacona taluka.

The closure comes, notwithstanding the government efforts to promote Konkani and Marathi education through the recently introduced scheme that grants schools Rs 400 per student.
According to the sources at the Canacona ADEI office, the government primary schools at Galiem-Poinginium, Shelim-Loliem and at Tudal in Poinginium have been closed down due to lack of students this academic year. Shelim is the lone Konkani medium school.
Sources in ADEI office further said that every year the situation is forbidding. “There are government primary schools with either negligible or no enrolment at all, it was thus decided to close down the schools with no enrolment and merge those having stumpy attendance with other primary schools in the locality,” said the source.
From 69 government primary schools last academic year, the count has come down to 66; earlier Canacona taluka had 72 government primary schools.
The source revealed that two more government primary schools would be shut down next academic year.
