Says committee is for wider consultation; to find solution to problems of para and contract teachers
PORVORIM: Taking a dig at the Opposition MLAs for raking up the medium of instruction (MoI) issue every now and then, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar categorically stated that grants to English medium minority schools will continue.
“The MoI issue is being raked up just to gain political mileage every now and then and a few leaders are working overtime to tarnish the image of the government, but the government will not budge,” Parsekar said, while replying to the Cut Motions on Demands of Education.
Parsekar said that it is a global principle that primary level education should be in mother tongue. “We have also started a scheme for giving a grant of Rs 400 per student to schools imparting primary education in the mother tongue and so far 20 schools in Konkani and Marathi have applied for the scheme,” he said.
However, he added, “This does not mean the grants to English schools will be withdrawn. The grants to English medium minority schools will remain uninterrupted,” Parsekar said.
On charges that the government is just buying time till the elections by appointing committees, the Chief Minister said, “Let me tell this House that the names in committee are not of politicians but educationists and the reason for appointing the committee is just for wider consultation and revisiting issues for facilitating proper decision.” Parsekar said it is a critical issue and the government needs advice on that.
Parsekar also said that he has asked the Education Secretary to find a proper solution to the issues faced by the para teachers and contract teachers. “I am a teacher and I sympathise with their issues,” he said.
