Parrikar will not contest 2017 assembly polls: BJP chief

PANAJI: Revealing that the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will not contest the forthcoming assembly polls in 2017, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Vinay Tendulkar said that the chief ministerial candidate will be decided by BJP Parliamentary Board after taking all MLAs into confidence.

Addressing the media at BJP headquarters in the city on Monday along with general secretary Sadanand Tanawade, Tendulkar said that Parrikar will need to campaign for only 15 days in the state before the elections. He further disclosed that prominent leaders like Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and others will also campaign in the state.
He also disclosed that the national BJP president Amit Shah will be on a three-day visit to the state from August 19 and on second day on August 20 he will address a sammelan of around 10,000 karyakartas at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium at Dona Paula. Shah will also hold meetings with core committee members and all BJP MLAs.
Tendulkar said that the BJP will celebrate Azadi Ke Sattar Saal Yaad Karo Qurbani as part of the Independence celebrations from August 9 to 17. BJP will also hold mashal procession from August 14 and 15 in all the constituencies. From August 15 to 18, Tiranga Yatra will be taken out by Minister for AYUSH Shripad Naik (North Goa MP) in north while Narendra Sawaikar (South Goa MP) will undertake a Yatra in the south. MPs will also visit historic places like Azad Maidan, Tilak Maidan, Patradevi and others to create awareness amongst youth about the sacrifices made by freedom fighters during the freedom struggle.
On the occasion, Tendulkar announced the appointment of Panaji MLA Sidharth Kunkalienkar as information technology cell chief and Gaurish Dhond as trade and industry cell chief. He said that Dhond will interact with all businessmen and industrialists in the state on the problems they face and if needed the BJP will invite national leaders including the Finance Minister to resolve the issues.
