Swapnil to probe lathi charge on fishermen

PANJIM: Three days after announcing a magisterial inquiry into the lathi charge on the fishermen last week, the government has appointed IAS officer Swapnil Naik to inquire into the episode.
“South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik is appointed as inquiry officer to conduct magisterial inquiry into the matter. The government is of the view that clear facts on the incident are to be brought out and therefore it needs to be inquired impartially,” the order issued on Tuesday states. The government has sought a report in 30 days.
Bowing to demands, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had announced a magisterial inquiry into the lathi charge on the fishermen and role of SP Karthik Kashyap in allegedly ordering the lathi charge without the mandatory order from the sub divisional magistrate.
The inquiry has to determine whether there was any incident of lathi charge and whether the sub-divisional magistrate had ordered a lathi charge. If there was a lathi charge and there was no order by the SDM, who ordered the lathi charge and the circumstances that led to the order of a lathi charge.
