PANAJI: The government on Friday raised the overall age limit for gaining employment in Group A, B, C and D, in the government service from the existing 40 years to 45 years.
Informing media persons about this cabinet decision, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said the age limit for government employment has been increased to check unemployment in the state.
“Furthermore, the average lifespan of a Goan has also increased to 70 years – 72 years for females and 68 years for males – and therefore, the cabinet decision is in accordance with the same,” he added.
Parsekar said that this decision would, however, not be applicable to those jobs, wherein much lesser age limit is specially prescribed, as for the junior police staff in police department, forest guards in the forest department, firefighters in the fire and emergency services, etc, as also for those posts, where higher age is fixed, such as for the posts of senior professors and so on.
The Chief Minister also said the decision comes into force from Friday, and hence would not be applicable to the ongoing interview procedures for government jobs. He, however, maintained that if any government department has advertised for posts then that department can re-advertise for the same posts by giving corrigendum about the extension in age limit for the candidates, with an additional 10-day notice period.
“The council of ministers today resolved to approve the proposal to enhance the upper age limit for any government job from present 40 years to 45 years by amending the existing provisions of the Recruitment Rules for Group A and B posts, and Group C and D posts for not exceeding 45 years, and relaxable for government servants up to five years in accordance with the instructions or the orders issued by the government from time to time,” the Chief Minister said.
“The above age limit shall not be applicable to Group A and B posts, wherever the present age limit is above 40 years, and to Group C and D, wherever the present age limit is below 40 years,” he noted.
The state cabinet also revived some posts including posts of exploration officer, exploration assistant, librarian and assistant archivist, Grade I in the department of archives and archaeology.
