CM vows to protect Goans registered in Portugal

I will write to Union Home Ministry to grant protection to these people: Parsekar

PANJIM: Asserting that “they are my people”, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Friday said he will write to the Union Home Ministry to provide protection to Goans, who have registered their birth in Portugal.
“See, if one has surrendered Indian citizenship and opted for some other citizenship, then that person stands to be eliminated,” Parsekar told media persons. “But, those who have only registered their birth in Portugal need to be protected. I will write to the Union Home Ministry to grant protection to these people,” the Chief Minister said responding to a question.
“They are my people and I need to protect them,” Parsekar asserted. “I will also see, what can be done to protect those Goans who have surrendered their citizenship. Ultimately they too are my people,” he added.
Government statistics claim there are nearly a lakh of Goans who have registered their births in
Portugal – a provision offered by the State’s former colonial rulers to those born before Goa’s Liberation in 1961 and to their children – but don’t hold a Portuguese passport or a citizen’s card.
