PANAJI: Stating that there are no more hurdles in the way of the proposed Mopa International Airport as the Ministry of Defence has given all required clearances to the ambitious project, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the international airport in North Goa either during the last week of August or first week of September, besides laying the foundations stones for two other important projects namely Tuem-based Electronic City and the super-specialty block at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC).
Rubbishing the news reports that the Ministry of Defence is withholding clearances to the Mopa International Airport due to the non-fulfilment of some conditions by the state government, Parsekar said that the clearances from the MoD have come since his government has provided clarifications to all the queries of the Ministry, and the successful bidder for constructing the airport would be announced on either July 10 or July 11, later this year.
The five parties, which have participated in the financial bid, include GVK, GMR, Essel Infra-Mumbai, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Voluptas Developers. The construction of the airport is expected to start by September 2016, and its first phase will be commissioned exactly three years after the laying of the foundation stone.
Speaking further, the Chief Minister said that the government intends to construct a super-specialty block at the GMC, which would not only house the eight super-specialty facilities presently available with the hospital, but also include additional such facilities. The 500-bedded, Rs 386-crore super-specialty block at the GMC, which is expected to be completed in 18-month time from the date of commencement of its construction, would have as many as 11 super-specialty facilities under its roof, including endocrinology, oncology and liver transplant.
