PANAJI: Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief in Goa Subhash Velingkar , on Tuesday resigned from chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar's 60th birthday celebration committee.
Deputy chief minister Francis D'Souza had, last week, announced that the BJP would hold a big bash for the chief minister, who turns 60 on July 5. The birthday celebration committee, headed by Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar, had Velingkar as its member. The chief minister had earlier said he has high respect for the RSS chief and has always referred to him as 'Velingkar sir'.
On Tuesday, Velingkar said the BBSM has been struggling to preserve Goa's culture following wrong policies by Parsekar's predecessor. He said people are still agitated as their demand for withdrawal of grants to the state's 127 English medium primary schools has not been accepted by the government, addin that he quit the birthday celebration committee as a matter of principle.
