10 schools for WiFi pilot project

Panaji: Two years after the Bharatiya Janta Party-led government proposed to link government institutions with WiFi connectivity, the government has prepared a list of 10 schools for the pilot project. The list includes six government-run institutions and four private schools, including Harmal Panchakroshi higher secondary school, run by a trust headed by chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

While the government has not set any specific timeline for setting it up, it had received a proposal from the Info Tech Corporation of Goa (ITG) to implement the pilot project at an estimated cost of 22.53 crore, for a period of five years.
If implemented, the system will enable efficient usage of laptops and tablets given to student under the cyberage scheme.
"The government has conducted an initial feasibility study to explore the possibility of providing WiFi connectivity in educational institutes across Goa in collaboration with NIC and the education department," Parsekar said.
Besides Harmal Panchakroshi higher secondary school, the selected schools are Vasant Kukalekar higher secondary school in Old Goa, Purshotam Walawalkar higher secondary school in Mapusa, Vidya Prabhodini higher secondary school in Porvorim, and the government higher secondary schools at Sakhali, Mastimol, Khandola, Sanguem, Baina, and the government multipurpose higher secondary school at Borda.
The government had already setup CCTV surveillance at four government offices — Curchorem-Cacora municipal council area, Ponda municipal council area, office of inspectorate of factories and boilers, and Goa medical college and hospital premises.
When the Goa Broad Band Network (GBBN) was launched, the implementing company, United Telecom Limited, had expressed its desire to implement Goa's proposed CCTV surveillance project, city wifi and school wifi projects in July 2015, but the state government dragged its feet in implementing the project.
