BJP lashes out at MGP for ‘double standards’ on MOI

PANAJI: State president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vinay Tendulkar will soon call on the president of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar to express his displeasure over the support of MGP to the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM), especially as the BBSM, in its meetings is appealing to the Goan public to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming state assembly election.

It may be recalled that the MGP president along with his party’s another legislator Lavu Mamledar had attended the public meeting of the BBSM at Ponda on July 24, and openly supported the BBSM demand to withdraw grants to the 135 English primary schools. The BBSM leaders had also urged the MGP to snap its ties with the BJP, for not withdrawing these grants.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP city headquarters on Monday, Tendulkar said that the MGP, as the coalition partner of the Digambar Kamat-led Congress government in 2011, was responsible for the decision to give government grants to 135 English primary schools. “The MGP, at that time could have expressed its dissatisfaction at the particular decision, and walked out of the Congress government,” he maintained, condemning the double standards displayed by the MGP leaders on the MOI issue.
“I am not a president of the MGP and hence cannot seek explanation from the MGP leaders over their recent act,” Tendulkar observed, pointing out, “However, I will definitely express my displeasure over the same.” He also hoped that good sense would prevail in the MGP leaders, and the BJP-MGP coalition would continue at the 2017 Goa assembly election.
Replying to a question, the state BJP president said that the BJP supports primary education in mother tongue. He also said that the government has already formed a committee under Bhaskar Naik, for advising over the issue of giving government grants to 135 English primary schools, and the government would accept the recommendations of this committee.
It was also informed that the gathering of state SC Morcha of the BJP would be held at Margao on July 30, gathering of the state ST Morcha of the party would be organised at Azad Maidan, Porvorim on August 6, while gathering of the BJP Minority Cell would be held in Panaji on August 13. It was further informed that a training camp for the Mahila Morcha of the BJP would be held on July 30 and July 31, at Calangute, and BJP MP Poonam Mahajan would attend the same.
