JNU's Varun Sahni named GU's new VC

Panaji: Varun Sahni, professor and chairperson, Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament (CIPOD) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, will be appointed the new Goa University vice-chancellor, the chancellor's office has informed the varsity on Tuesday afternoon.
Sahni, a political scientist of international repute, will be the first in several years to take over the Goa University vice-chancel's post after a series of academics from the science stream.
Current vice-chancellor Satish Shetye's extended term in office is set to come to an end in October. Shetye, however, has indicated that he is open to stepping down earlier, based on the new VC's willingness to join before October, sources said.
The committee, headed by Raghunath Mashelkar, had earlier recommended the names of potential vice-chancellors candidates to chancellor Mridula Sinha. The chancellor's office will now wait for Sahni to indicate his desired date of joining. Sahni has earlier served as Reader in Latin American Politics at Goa University.
Sahni researches and writes on nuclear deterrence issues, regional security, emerging balances in the Asia-Pacific, evolving security concepts, emerging powers, international relations theory, borders, Latin American issues and, most recently, river waters. He has participated in over 220 academic conferences, 90 of them held outside India, as paper presenter, session chair, organizer or discussant.
