PANAJI: The legislators, on Tuesday, demanded that all the commercial establishments along the national highways and major roads should allow free parking space to its customers.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that amendments to the concerned regulations will be brought to solve the issue.
Panaji MLA Sidharth Kunkalienkar tabled a calling attention motion for not providing parking spaces/facilities by the malls, showrooms and shopping complexes which have been constructed by the side of the highways due to which accidents are taking place.
Stating that Goa ranks fourth in the list of highest density of roads in the country, Kunkalienkar demanded to “take a policy decision for across the state where business establishments are utilising the highways and service lanes for their parking.”
Thivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar seconding the demand said that the customers of the mall in Porvorim should be allowed free parking in the premises to solve the problem. Responding to the demands Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, who is also the Home Minister, said that people should realise that the roads are for driving and not for parking their vehicles.
Parsekar further said that “we will bring an amendment to the regulations and form a steering committee to study the issue.”
