Let parents decide on MOI, says Cabral

PANAJI: Urging the government to let the parents decide the Medium of Instruction (MoI) in which their wards should study, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral on Wednesday said that the decision should not be taken by politicians.

Informing the legislative assembly that a memorandum with 933 parents as signatories has been submitted to him, Cabral said that the MoI issue is not an issue based on religious identities and the representation submitted to him has around equal number of parents from the Hindu as well as Christian community and the rest from amongst Muslims.
Cabral further said, “Politicians should not decide on MoI but the issue should be left to the people. The government should focus on creating job opportunities for the educated.”
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco too echoed the sentiments and stated, “People should not be divided on religious lines.”
Cumbharjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar expressed concerns over the government’s decision to provide special grant of Rs 400 per student studying in primary schools with either Konkani or Marathi as MoI. He said, “I don’t think the government’s financial status can sustain the scheme. Even if we consider that there are twenty thousand students, will Rs 400 reach all the students in all the schools.”
He further said that the frustration of unemployment has reached to such an extent that even engineers, advocates and graduates are applying for sweepers’ post.
