Now, pontoon pieces cause pain for locals

Cansaulim: The last portion of the grounded pontoon at Arossim beach had been pulled out on June 25, 2016, but the villagers and others are disappointed, as the scrap is still piled up all over the beach.
The pontoon used for a beach party had grounded on Arossim beach nearly three months ago. The village fishermen and water sports operators complained of obstruction to their activities.
The villagers alleged that the rusty material poses a hazard to the residents. "The pieces are lying all over the beach and the scrap has also damaged the sand dunes," a villager said.
The ship breakers had also dug a pit-like a pond, which was left unattended for many days, but was only covered on Monday.
"The anchors are yet to retrieved from the seabed and these will create problems for fishermen. The pontoon owner has not yet been booked,"Simoes said. The ship breaker had assured South Goa collector Swapnil Naik to shift the scrap last week.
"We had asked him to shift it simultaneously during the scrapping of vessel, but he states that he has not been able to find a place on lease for storing the scrap," Naik said.
While the collector's office is contemplating further action, the charterer is also trying to shift it directly from the site.
