Sakhali chief officer booked for offering bribe

PANAJI: The anti-corruption branch of the vigilance department has filed a FIR against the chief officer of Sakhali Municipal Council, Shripad Arlekar, following a complaint by councillor Damodar Ghadi, that he was offered a 5 lakh bribe to sign the no-confidence motion against the chairperson Dharmesh Saglani.

The no-confidence motion was moved by the BJP-supported group against Saglani, who is aspiring for a Congress ticket against the sitting MLA Pramod Sawant.
Ghadi, one of the seven members ruling in the council of 11 members, has written to the superintendent of police, anti-corruption branch, vigilance department, complaining that Arlekar allegedly has been contacting him since June 15 asking him to quote his demand and offering him money. "As I did not meet him, he has called me many times since June 15, till date. Today, in the afternoon, he again called me and offered to hand over the money to me while signing the no-confidence motion itself somewhere in Mapusa. The exact place of handing over the money is not disclosed by him. He said that he will call at around 3.30pm and will intimate the exact place of meeting to handover the said amount," Ghadi stated in his letter, dated June 20, requesting for needful action.
