Panaji: Goa University's new vice-chancellor (VC) Varun Sahni will take over office on August 19, GU officials have confirmed.
The current VC Satish Shetye's request to be relieved from his duties in August itself, though his term in office ends in October, was accepted by the varsity chancellor Mridula Sinha earlier this month.
Sahni was asked by Goa University soon after if he would be able to take over his new responsibilities in August, and he had agreed.
Varun Sahni is professor and chairperson of Centre for international politics, organization and disarmament (CIPOD) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and was named the new Goa University vice-chancellor by a committee headed by Raghunath Mashelkar in May this year.
Sahni has served as reader in Latin American politics at Goa University earlier. A political scientist of international repute, he will be the first in several years to take over the Goa University vice-chancellor's post after a series of academics from the science stream.
From December 2008 to January 2012, he served as the 10th vice-chancellor of the University of Jammu.
