State sticks to its guns, shoots down Sunburn's application

Panaji: The state level permission committee (SLPC) on Tuesday decided not to approve the application moved by Percept Ltd to organize the electronic dance music (EDM) festival, Sunburn, from December 27 to 30 at Vagator. The final decision though will be taken by chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar.
The SLPC decided to maintain its stand that no EDM festival can be permitted during the last week of December, the festive period of Christmas and New Year. An SLPC member said that it took the said stand on the grounds that the chief minister last year while granting permission to Supersonic and Sunburn had remarked that no EDM be permitted from December 15 to January 15.

The SLPC meeting headed by chief secretary R K Srivastava lasted for over an hour, and most members consented that the organizers of Sunburn should not be permitted to conduct the festival on the dates sought by it in view of the chief minister's remark.
Representatives of the police department pointed out that arrears of the two organizers - Sunburn 95.97 lakh and Supersonic 1.10 crore - should be recovered before they can be granted permission.

The report of the Pawaskar committee was also considered at the meeting. The Pawaskar committee was appointed after the organizers of the two events disputed the bills raised by police department as protection charges. It was given a mandate to examine the claims of both.
President of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) Savio Messias, who is also an SLPC member told TOI that the chief minister's noting should be considered if two EDM festival proposals were before the committee. The organizers of Supersonic haven't applied to the tourism department yet.
"I have also told them whatever may be the decision of the government on the EDM festivals, the organizers have to be intimated in advance, and not be kept waiting till the 11th hour," said Messias, adding that people book their tickets and accommodation in advance. Last minute cancellations will lead to cancellation of hotel booking as well, impacting the tourism industry.
