Panaji: Deputy speaker Vishnu Surya Wagh, who is undergoing treatment at the Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, is showing signs of improvement hospital officials said.
"He has been weaned off the ventilator. All of his other organs are functioning well. He underwent a tracheostomy on August 19. If he continues to be comfortable without the ventilator, then further treatment plan will be worked out," said director, Professional Services, Hinduja Hospital.
"Wagh's medical bulletin has been released by the hospital. His condition has improved compared to what it was when he was in the Goa medical college. But his improvement is gradual," chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar told reporters on Tuesday, on the sidelines of a function in Panaji.
Replying to a question Parsekar, who visited Wagh in Mumbai two days ago, said "it is a fact that he smiled when I went to meet him".
Wagh, who suffered a cardiac arrest on August 15, was resuscitated at the Goa medical college (GMC) and hospital, Bambolim, before being transferred to the Hinduja Hospital on August 18.
On admission, he was deeply unconscious, but all his other organs were functioning normally. He has undergone an MRI examination of his brain and has had three electroencephalograms (EEG). He has been examined by a neurologist and three intensivists, the medical bulletin said.
His brain has suffered significant injury because of lack of blood supply to the brain when he suffered the cardiac arrest. It is now 12 days since he suffered the cardiac arrest and there is an improvement in his medical status, the Goa government said quoting the director of the hospital.
