PM Modi to chair meet to review Indus Waters treaty in response to Uri attack

After taking on Pakistan in strong words for exporting terror, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reportedly chair a high-level meeting the Indus Waters Treaty on Monday.

According to reports, Modi will meet officials from External Affairs, Water Resources and other ministries, and the meeting will look at the pros and cons of the treaty signed 56 years ago under which India and Pakistan share the waters from six rivers.

However, amid media reports, PTI said that there was no official confirmation of meeting being held.

The officials of the ministries of Water Resources and External Affairs denied any knowledge of such a meeting being convened by the Prime Minister.

There have been consistent calls in India for the government to scrap the water distribution pact to mount pressure on Pakistan in the aftermath of the audacious Uri terror attack on September 18.

Under the treaty, which was signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan in September 1960, waters from six river — Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum — were to be shared between the two countries.

Pakistan has been complaining of not receiving enough water and resorted to international arbitration in a couple of cases.
