Cites important pre-scheduled commitments in the State for rescheduling the meet
PANJIM: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has urged his Maharashtra counterpart to reschedule the tri-partite meeting on the Mhadei water diversion row, as he is pre-occupied with other assignments on Friday, the day the meeting had been scheduled in Mumbai.
The Chief Ministers of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka were supposed to meet in Mumbai to reach an amicable solution on the dispute involving the three states on diversion of the Mhadei river waters, following directions from the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT).
In a communication to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 18, Parsekar requested that the meeting be postponed by a fortnight.
“I regret to inform that on account of certain important pre-scheduled commitments in the State, I will not be able to attend this meeting. I would request that this meeting is convened after a fortnight and a few dates for the same may kindly be suggested in advance so that a suitable date may be mutually agreed upon and the meeting fixed accordingly,” Parsekar said.
Earlier this month, Fadnavis through a communication had informed Parsekar about the meeting on October 21. “The meeting will definitely help us in resolving the issues amicably in a friendly environment along with true spirit of mutual cooperation and collaboration, thereby avoiding hectic and time consuming quasi-judicial proceedings in the Tribunal,” Fadnavis had said.
Parsekar had called for an all party meeting on October 10 to decide the State’s action for the tri-partite meeting. The meeting had resolved that the Chief Minister should attend the meeting but ensure that Goa’s interests are not compromised.
The State is in dispute with Maharashtra and Karnataka over diversion of Mhadei river water. Goa has a strong case wherein it has objected to diversion of water outside the Mhadei basin.
