Babush allegedly bought girl for Rs 50 lakh

PANAJI: St Cruz MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, who is accused of raping a minor girl, had allegedly purchased the victim for a sum of Rs 50 lakh for sexual exploitation.
It has come to light that girl’s mother and another woman whom the victim referred as aunt had delivered her to Monserrate for sexual exploitation for consideration of Rs 50,00,000.
The incident of alleged rape had taken place in March this year wherein the accused wrongfully confined her, administered stupefying substance and had sexual intercourse with the girl  without her consent, said a police officer referring to the complaint of the 16-year-old girl from Nepal.
The police on Wednesday had registered an FIR against Monserrate on the charge of allegedly raping the minor girl.
Various other sections of the laws have also been invoked in the case. Offence of criminal conspiracy and abatement was also registered against the mother of the victim and another woman.
The alleged rape had taken place in March (date not known) between 6 pm to 11 am the next day at the farmhouse of Monserrate in Taleigao.
The victim in her statement to the authorities has alleged that when she woke up next morning she was without clothes, and  Monserrate was sitting without his clothes on, the police said.
The girl also said her mother fooled her by saying that she (the girl) was going to meet Monserrate for work asking her to dress properly.
The police said that after the alleged rape the girl was not in good terms with her mother. A month back both had a spar on a road in Miramar.  Subsequently the police reached the spot and intervened.
However, the victim was in no mood to go back to her mother, and since she was a minor the police took her to Apna Ghar, Merces.
It was here that after counselling by members of the child welfare committee she narrated her ordeal.
