IIT-Bombay is mentor for IIT-Goa

PANAJI: The senior faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Prof S S Major on Monday stated that IIT-Bombay is only a mentor for the proposed IIT-Goa, and would not be able to take any decision as regards setting up of the prestigious institution in Goa.
“IIT-Bombay has been appointed as the mentor for the Goa-based IIT by the Union ministry of human resource development, and will provide academic support to IIT-Goa,” Prof Major, who is also in-charge for the Goa Common Entrance Test 2016 stated, further adding that the Goan authorities will have to decide about establishing IIT-Goa.
Director for technical education Vivek Kamat stated that a team from the Union ministry of human resource development would soon be arriving in Goa for inspecting a land identified by the government to set up IIT-Goa.
Director of IIT Bombay Prof D V Khakhar is a member of the team.
The government has identified nearly 5 lakh sq mts of communidade land in the villages of Shristhal, Loliem and Poinguinim, in Canacona taluka to set up the prestigious institution.
The government had proposed to start the IIT-Goa from the academic year 2015-16, however the proposal could not materialised due to its failure to provide suitable land for setting up of the prestigious institution.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had recently told ‘The Navhind Times’ that subject to clearance for the Canacona land from the Union ministry of human resource development, the government could provide temporary campus for IIT-Goa at the premises of the Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, till its own infrastructure is ready at Canacona, within next three years.
“Still better, the government could request IIT-Mumbai located at Powai to temporarily allow IIT-Goa campus in its premises,” he had added.
