PANAJI: Appealing for unity of the people of Goa cutting across religious lines to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday pitched for his party’s clean sweep in the 2017 Goa state assembly elections.
“Goa has a chance to bring the revolution. Hindus, Muslims, Christians all have to unite and contest the elections,” he said.
Addressing his rally attended by thousands of people at Campal, Kejriwal stated that the power of a common man should never be underestimated and emphasised on the ability of the common man to elect an honest government and eradicate corruption. He said that it was the new faces like that of a housewife and a UPSC aspirant, who defeated the heavyweights of politics in Delhi. “We don’t have money to contest elections. But the way people of Delhi worked tirelessly and campaigned, in the same way, people of Goa have an opportunity to elect honest politicians and change the government,” Kejriwal said.
Taking a dig at former chief minister and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the BJP-led state government, he said that the people of Goa feel cheated, and dared Parrikar to list five things, which were mentioned in the party’s
election manifesto of 2012 and have been completed. He said that on the eve on the 2012 elections, Parrikar had promised to send to jail, all those involved in illegal mining in the state. “Parrikar promised to remove casinos from Goa, he also promised to remove corruption from Goa, but nothing has changed,” he said.
Kejriwal said, “There was mining scam and Louis Berger scam during the Congress rule, but the new scams during the BJP-led government are Entertainment Society of Goa scam, beach cleaning scam.” He said that by suspending the Regional Plan 2021, the government has enabled rampant land conversions. He said, “Parrikar is involved less in Defence Ministry and more in the state affairs.” Laxmikant Parsekar is the dummy Chief Minister of the state and Parrikar clears all the files during his weekend visits, claimed Kejriwal.
Stating that the Congress defined tourism as sex, drugs and gambling, he said nothing has changed and the same definition continued even after BJP came to power. He alleged that to facilitate setting up of brewery in Uguem village, the BJP government changed the definition of the coconut tree and the coconut tree ceased to be a tree and has become grass. “If they wish, they will sell entire Goa,” he said.
Accusing the BJP and Congress of indulging in rampant corruption during their consecutive terms in the government, Kejriwal said that the parties have sucked out everything from Goa. “I can see the same anger in the people of Goa which we saw in Delhi,” he said.
Contrary to the expectations of the people, who had gathered to listen to Kejriwal’s dream for the state of Goa, the AAP chief pitched for an honest and corruption-free government in the year 2017. Claiming that corruption in Delhi had declined drastically by 70-80 per cent, he said, “Delhi had decided that enough is enough now and not to tolerate corruption anymore.”
