MARGAO
In a tragic incident, Ashlesha Ramesh Naik (43), a councillor of the Margao municipal council, and Ashraf Shaikh (17) from Cacora, Curchorem drowned in Khandepar river at Sonarbhatt, Usgao on Sunday.
Three groups of picnickers, including the group of Ashlesha, had left the Bondla zoo and travelled to Sonarbhatt, Usgao to swim in the river.
Around 12 pm, while swimming, Ashraf started drowning. Seeing his son drowning the father cried for help. Ashlesha, a good swimmer, wasted no time and jumped into the river to save the boy.
However, Ashlesha was pulled by the drowning boy, and both the persons drowned.
“We got the information at 12.15 pm. We rushed to the spot. However, Ashlesha and Ashraf had already been moved to the ID Hospital, Ponda. Doctors there claimed they were brought dead,’’ said PSI Harish Naik of the Ponda police station.
Ashlesha’s death astounded the people of Margao, especially councillors. Several shocked MMC councillors rushed to her residence at Aquem to inquire about their colleague. The MMC chairperson, the vice-chairperson, the chief officer and others condoled the death of Ashlesh with the family.
A pall of gloom prevailed at her residence. Ashlesha, who was elected from the Aquem ward in the municipal elections, was looking after her father’s steel-furniture business.
“… She died for others. It is very sad and unfortunate,” said Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, who was in Margao on Sunday.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, with whose support she was elected as a MMC councillor, said Ashlesha was soft-spoken and a kindhearted person.
The Ponda police registered a case of unnatural death.
The body has been kept for postmortem at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
Final rites for Ashlesha will be held in Margao at 11 am on Monday.
