Open rebellion by Calangute MLA; says BJP won’t get mandate of 2012, hints more BJP MLAs will echo his sentiments
CALANGUTE: Has the BJP faced it first ever direct and open rebellion? Its Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has said that his party will not get the same mandate of 2012 and has gone a step further by saying five ministers in the Laxmikant Parsekar government should be dropped.
“To a certain extent people are angry and the overwhelming response we got in 2012 will not be there in 2017 due to the under-performance of a few ministers, which could backfire on the party,” he told Herald.
“I had asked Manohar Parrikar two years ago. I had told him why don’t you reshuffle and bring in five new faces and drop five old ones. It is always healthy as the people who will come will perform,” Lobo said.
Lobo said that some of the ministers are so bad that they are not fit for the job. “Finally it reflects on the party and the MLAs when the minister is not functioning,” he said.
Asked what he means about non-performing ministers, he explained, “Minister does not mean minister of the constituency but of the State. Some of them want a ministry just for the red beacon, extra security, more staff, the prestige and nothing else,” Lobo said.
Lobo said that when other MLAs joined him and said to Chief Minister Parsekar “he had no words to say.”
Asked whether he was hinting at Dilip Parulekar, Dayanand Mandrekar or Alina Saldanha, as three of the five ministers, with whom he has had spats in the past, Lobo replied, “No, I am not hinting at anybody and do not want to name anyone. People of Goa know who they are.” But then he said “My problem with Mandrekar and Parulekar is not personal. It is only related to work,” he added.
To a query that there are talks that he will desert BJP and join some other party and hence the statements, he said, “This was being said even in 2012. I am very much in the BJP and it is up to them to give me a ticket or not just because I’m speaking against something wrong. I feel as a loyal soldier it is my duty to point out if there are any wrongs in the party. And similarly they should tell me if I am wrong.”
“Even if they deny me the ticket I will fight as an independent. I will get peoples’ ticket. I am not scared I can even contest as an independent and win,” Lobo quipped.
