PANJIM: Stating that the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) cannot intervene in the Campal parade ground garbage mess, Commissioner Deepak Dessai categorically stated that shifting of the waste to the solid waste treatment facility at Saligao will turn the site into another ‘Sonsodo’.
“It is not possible to transport such huge quantity of non-segregated waste to Saligao plant. It will turn into Sonsodo. The plant can treat small quantity of such waste. This is not possible,” Dessai told media persons after the Council meeting on Thursday.
The issue was raised by local corporator Soraya Makhija during CCP’s ordinary meeting, wherein she highlighted the environmental and health impacts as a result of huge dumps of garbage on the parade ground. She demanded that the waste be immediately shifted out to avoid an epidemic.
Replying to this, the Commissioner said, “Corporation cannot intervene as the ground is currently in possession of Goa State Urban Development Corporation (GSUDA) which is constructing a football stadium there.”
“GSUDA has appointed a Delhi-based contractor to clear the waste and treat it. The work was supposed to start in January but they commenced it only in May. With segregation the waste is looking more,” he added.
Dessai said directions have been issued to the contractor to cover the waste dumps with tarpaulin in the monsoon and simultaneously undertake segregation. He said the Corporation has stopped dumping waste at Campal.
