PANAJI: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Monday reaffirmed that the BRICS Summit 2016 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be held in the state.
Goa will host 12 events related to the BRICS from August to October this year including the leaders’ summit.
Refuting reports in a section of the media on Monday that the BRICS summit is being shifted to a different location, Parsekar said the news was false and that no such communication has been received from the Union government.
“The state is gearing up to host BRICS Summit, and whatever is required for the event would be in place. BRICS will happen in Goa,” the Chief Minister reaffirmed.
Speculations were rife after the news reports claimed that the summit was being shifted to Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The city of monuments will host the BRICS convention of tourism from August 31 to September 1, but the same was misconstrued as the leaders’ summit.
The BRICS is a bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The BRICS leaders’ summit is slated to be held in Goa on October 16, this year.
India is hosting the 8th BRICS Summit this year with the theme ‘building responsive, inclusive and collective solutions’. The calendar of event of the BRICS 2016 includes 12 events scheduled in Goa apart from 82 other events spread across the country.
Goa will host the meeting of BRICS working group on environment on August 19 or 28 followed by the meeting of BRICS Environment Ministers on August 20 or 29.
Between September 19 to September 22, the state will host the BRICS academic forum where experts and scholars of the academic communities from the member countries meet and engage to encourage academic exchange, strengthen dialogue with civil society, as well as provide policy advice.
Majority of the meetings and events have been scheduled for October 14-16. On the first day, meetings of BRICS Finance Ministers and central bank governors, the meeting of working group of BRICS Development Banks and a workshop on export credit will be held.
On October 15, a meeting of the BRICS business council, annual meeting of BRICS interbank cooperation mechanism and BRICS financial forum will be held. The meeting of heads of BRICS Development Banks with NDB (New Development Bank) is scheduled to be held on October 15 and 16.
On October 16, meetings in Goa will conclude with the BRICS business council interaction with BRICS leaders.
Besides, U-17 football tournament will be held in Goa. However, the schedule for the tournament, which is slated to be held in October, are awaited.
