PANAJI: Monsoon finally arrived in the state after a delay of about 12 days, the Goa IMD has confirmed. An IMD official said, “Monsoon arrived in many parts of Goa on Monday, but it is still weak and in coming days, it will get active over the entire state. There has been a delay of almost a fortnight as southwest monsoon usually hits the state on June 7.”
In the coming days, possibility of heavy downpours for long durations is highly unlikely. However, moderate rain is likely to occur at most place, and heavy rains at isolated places for next five days, says IMD observation.
Also, heavy showers for short durations may occur over some parts of the city. However, on and off, rains will continue over the city. The local forecast for the capital city has shown sky to be generally cloudy with a few spells of rain for next 48 hours.
The weather department expects to receive 6 per cent more rainfall than last year. The poorest monsoon in the last six years was recorded in 2015-16 with a high deficit of 20 per cent.
The current spell of rain has not helped in pulling down the regional deficiency to a large extent. Also, the latest spell of rain was moderate in intensity with state having recorded 17 mm rainfall in last 24 hours and maximum rainfall of 3 cm was recorded at Sanguem, Panaji and Mapusa received 2 cm rain each, followed by Quepem and Sanguem which received 1 cm rainfall. Maximum temperatures were below normal.
