Monsoon to hit Goa next week; above normal rain predicted

PANAJI: Goa will witness heavy rainfall at many places for the next four days, with the weather department predicting above normal rainfall during the June-September monsoon season after the onset of south west monsoon, which will reach Goa by next week.
“The 2016 monsoon rain will be normal and well distributed. The models are indicating ten per cent above average rainfall from June to September. A total seasonal rainfall of 2971.7mm (116.9 inches) is considered normal,” said an official of India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The poorest monsoon in the last six years with a high deficit of 20 per cent was recorded in 2015-16.
In the last 24 hours, the state has recorded 73 mm rainfall with high quantum of rainfall of 13 cm recorded at Ponda and 8 cm recorded at Old Goa and Sankhali followed by Panaji, which received 7 cm of rainfall. Maximum temperature was above normal in North Goa district. The highest maximum temperature of 34.2 degree Celsius was recorded at Panaji.
The state has received pre-monsoon rain showers from June instead of receiving them during the pre-monsoon period from March due to which the deficiency has mounted in several parts of the region. There is a large deficit of 92 per cent rainfall since May 26 to June 1. North Goa was observing rainfall deficiency of 93 per cent, which slightly dropped to 90 per cent during the period between May 26 and June 1. The rainfall deficiency in South Goa was 93 per cent during the same period as against 77 per cent till March 31. Since the last one week till Monday, the state has received 89.6 mm of rainfall with deficiency of 26.2 mm.
The current spell of rain has not helped in pulling down the regional deficiency to a large extent. Notably, the state normally receives 95 mm rainfall during the pre-monsoon period between March 1 to May 31, but due to several atmospheric factors, the pre-monsoon showers were delayed.
