Rains lash state, power disrupted

Panaji : The city and most parts of Goa received widespread rainfall accompanied by claps of thunder for more than an hour on Monday night. Power supply was hit in many parts of the state and water logging was witnessed in low lying areas.
During the last 24 hours till Monday morning, only Canacona had recorded 23.6mm of rainfall and Sanguem 2.3mm while other centres did not even record a trace. But as forecast by meteorological centre the pre-monsoon activity is likely to pick up momentum.
The meteorological centre recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius on Monday.
rain or thunder shower is very likely to occur at many places in Goa on June 6 and 7 and at most places on subsequent three days.
The southwest monsoon is expected to advance over Kerala by Wednesday. Goa is expected to receive monsoon showers in another six to seven days.
The thunder showers caused slight inundation of water, disruption of electricity in some places, cable and mobile networks.
Margao and its suburbs, especially Navelim, had no power supply for some time while many other areas across Goa had to do without power.
Heavy pre-monsoon showers damaged goods as water gushed into some shops in Mapusa causing huge losses.
The fire and emergency services received ten calls in the city and Ponda, including one from Pilerne regarding uprooting of trees. In one case, a house near the Caranzalem fish market was inundated with rain water.
