Gangster Bengre killed in Colvale jail

Fellow inmate Kurbatkar identified as accused; incident recorded on CCTV

PANJIM: Notorious gangster Ashpaq Ubbass Bengre who was charged in several cases of murder, attempts to murder, extortion, threatening and drug peddling, was killed by a fellow inmate at Colvale Jail on Tuesday morning when he was being taken to court.

Goa Police have registered an offence and identified Vinayak Tulsidas Kurbatkar, resident of Penha De Franca, an under trial lodged at Colvale Central Jail, as the accused. Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes said Bengre was attacked with a sharp weapon.
Sources at Colvale jail said the murder took place under CCTV surveillance and the entire incident has been recorded. Sources said that after stabbing Bengre, Kurbatkar accused ran towards the mess section.
The case has been handed over to Crime Branch. CB SP Karthik Kashyap said the inquiry is in a preliminary stage as they are yet to get custody of accused. He said the inquest panchnama and post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday.
Inspector General of Goa Police Sunil Garg said Kurbatkar will be taken on a production warrant and interrogated. “Bengre had been taken by Goa Police on production warrant from Ludhiana Police in connection with an attempt to murder case. He was arrested in Punjab for drug peddling,” Garg said.
Police said the weapon used in the murder cannot be recognized based on CCTV footage. Garg said the weapon has not yet been recovered and he has also not ruled out the possibility of this being a contract killing. “We are investigating the case from all angles, we don’t want to leave any issues unanswered,” Garg said, when queried on the possibility of this being a contract killing.
A source said that in the past there had been a scuffle between Bengre and another under trail when they were in the Mapusa judicial lock up and Bengre had then sustained injuries though he had attacked the inmate.
Sources said Kurbatkar is very close to the person who had been attacked by Bengre and that person is currently lodged at Sada Sub Jail and due to be shifted to Colvale. Jail sources suspect this may be one of the reasons behind attack on Bengre.
Sources also said that Kurbatkar and Bengre were friendly and never had fought or argued. The incident has shocked jail inmates.
