Floatel set to move away from Chorao island today

Panaji: The flotilla of casinos anchored off Panaji's shores will see another addition on Friday with the Captain of Ports (CoP) directing the promoters of MV Flotel, stationed near Salim Ali bird sanctuary, to shift the vessel towards Betim.

The move came on Thursday after the government gave in to mounting pressure from civic groups that wanted the casino to move away from the sanctuary's vicinity. On July 23, faced with protests from Ribandar locals, CM Laxmikant Parsekar had issued an order to direct the CoP to immediately shift Deltin Caravela, operating out of M V Flotel, to Panaji.
"The department has directed the people concerned to shift the vessel on Friday morning," CoP James Braganza said.
The vessel had entered River Mandovi last month and was anchored towards Britona. But faced with residents' opposition, it was shifted towards the bird sanctuary on the Ribandar side. But residents there called for a bandh, which was later withdrawn. They even met with governor Mridula Sinha and submitted a memorandum urging her to get the government to stop promoting casino culture in the state.
Only last week, national green tribunal (NGT) admitted a plea filed jointly by environmental activists, fishermen and villagers against Deltin Caravela alleging violation of the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) notification 2011.
Even the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) had issued a showcause notice to the casino after similar allegations had surfaced earlier.
