CALANGUTE: Calangute witnessed a ruckus on Friday, after a number of Hindu community members came out to express their displeasure over the ‘failure’ on the part of the authorities to fully implement the NGT order, pertaining to the demolition of illegal structures erected near the crematorium at Khobrawaddo and restoration of the site to its original state.
Around 100 residents gathered at the site after the officials including Bardez mamlatdar Madhu Narvekar arrived for removing the structures – shacks and sheds erected in the CRZ, with a posse of policemen from Calangute alongwith a demolition squad.
Babreshwar Devasthan Committee members had heated arguments with the mamlatdar and CRZ officials over the implementation the order as some days back some structures were razed by owner but not completely.
The villagers wanted earthmoving machinery to be brought at the site for removing the structures completely and restoring the place to its original state. Following the ruckus, the mamlatdar did not press the earthmoving machinery into service for demolishing the structures, and instead asked the labourers to clear the site of the material and temporary sheds.
President of the devasthan committee Uday Shirodkar said that previously the owner had only dismantled the cottages that were erected near the crematorium but not cleared the material from the site.
All temporary structures erected within the 200 metre high tide line need to be removed as per the order of the NGT, he maintained.
Narvekar said that the demolition squad had come to implement the order of the NGT, and he was present at the site to see that there was no untoward incident.
Lavish Shirodkar, junior scientific assistant, said that he was sent to ensure that the structures erected within the 200 metres of HTL were removed as per the order of the NGT.
