Panaji: Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar said he would ask for a preliminary enquiry into a complaint of bribery filed against inspector general of police (IGP) S Garg on Thursday.
Vasco-based businessman Munnalal Halwai alleged that he had approached the IGP in 2015 after the Ponda police station failed to entertain his complaint of cheating amounting to 1.5 crore against an influential person in Ponda.
Halwai alleged in a complaint lodged with the anti-corruption branch of the vigilance department that he had to offer 5 lakh to the officer for the registration of the FIR. He further alleged that after paying the amount, the FIR was registered, but no action was taken against the accused. Subsequently the case was transferred to the crime branch.
Halwai said he has approached a local court against the police officer.
"I am surprised by the allegation of the complainant. The allegations are serious and I will enquire into it," the chief minister said. I will ask a senior officer to look into the matter, he added.
IGP has vehmently denied the allegation.
The complaint filed by Halwai had not been registered by ACB till late evening.
