Herald’s visit to the kitchen revealed dead insects in water barrels, soiled utensils, dirty floor and food items kept in the open besides dead cockroaches in food packets
VASCO: The cases of two policemen on BRICS duty falling ill to suspected food poisoning has exposed the unhygienic conditions in the makeshift roadside kitchen near the Verna Police station where the food was allegedly prepared for the men in uniform.
A Herald visit to the said makeshift kitchen revealed dead insects in water barrels, soiled utensils, dirty floor and food items kept in the open besides dead cockroaches in food packets.
This depicted an appalling picture and exposed how the food which was supplied to the policemen on BRICS Summit duty was prepared in the said makeshift kitchen.
It was also revealed that the concerned contactor appointed to prepare and supply food items to policemen on BRICS duty had not taken precautions due to which some food packets supplied to the policemen contained dead cockroaches.
The issue of “unhygienic” food supplied to the policemen also becomes important because two police constables including Shastri Bind and Shivshankar Chawdhari, who were on BRICS duty at Sancoale fell ill from suspected food poisoning and were admitted to the Cottage Hospital at Chicalim. Both reportedly fell ill after allegedly consuming chicken Biryani served to them late Sunday evening. Taking cognizance of the “unhygienic” temporary kitchen, several NGOs and social activists from port town criticised state administration for supplying “stale” food to the policemen discharging their duties for BRICS Summit.
“After I came to know about two policemen falling ill to suspected food poisoning, I personally visited the temporary kitchen at Verna and noticed that the whole kitchen was in complete mess and without any hygiene. Also when I opened a few food packets, which were packed and ready to supply, I was completely shocked as the biryani rice was not fit for human consumption. I feel that the government should take a serious note of the same and should order a probe for such negligence due to which two policemen fell ill due to suspected food poisoning on Sunday,” said Vasco-based NGO member Tara Kerkar.
Similarly, the Vasco-based social activist Preetam Keluskar said, “It is a criminal negligence on the part of the contractor preparing and supplying food items to the policemen as they have no rights to serve “substandard” food cooked in most “unhygienic” conditions. We demand that an enquiry be conducted and that the culprits be booked and punished”.
Meanwhile, Vasco police sources informed that soon after receiving information on the constables falling ill due to suspected food poisoning, Vasco SDPO DySP visited the temporary kitchen at Verna and asked the concerned contractor to stop the food supply. She also directed the contractor to prepare fresh food and serve the same to the policemen. Sources also informed that the many police constables, who had received biryani on Sunday evening refused to consume the same as they complained of foul smell.
