Congress sends out veiled warning to Madkaikar

Panaji: With patience running out, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Wednesday issued a veiled warning to Cumbharjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijaya Singh saying the party would not fall prey to blackmail or pressure tactics.

Questioning Madkaikar's absence at key party meetings and his vocal outbursts against the party, Singh said, "If he is not interested, we will find another candidate. The Congress is firm that it will not succumb to any kind of pressure or blackmail." Singh was addressing a press conference in Panaji.
The Congress is scouting for probable candidates in Cumbharjua constituency to take on the BJP and the MGP as Madkaikar is virtually out of the Congress. He is the second MLA to move towards BJP. Mauvin Godinho being the first.
Sources said that former Carambolim sarpanch Wilson Valadares and former Divar sarpanch Mario Pinto are among the two the party is looking at as probable candidates.
Madkaikar has openly voiced his desire to contest the 2017 state assembly elections on either the BJP or MGP ticket. The MLA has repeatedly skipped key meetings with the Congress state and central leadership and has accused the Congress leadership of being in "hibernation" with no "plans to tackle the government".
Madkaikar attended a function at Taleigao 10 days ago when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Mopa international airport and the electronic city at Tuem, both in Pernem.
Sources say that as the MGP has also approached Madkaikar, he BJP is trying ‘poach' Madkaikar first.
