Drives to Mahalaxmi Temple, Miramar Chapel and then heads home; says he’s been ‘fixed and framed’
PANJIM: St Cruz MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate went home on Wednesday, after the Children’s Court granted him conditional bail with a surety of Rs 1 lakh and asking him to report to the Investigating Officer for seven days. The Court also granted bail to Rosy Ferros and the victim’s mother with surety of Rs 25,000 each and asking them to report to the investigation officer for seven days.
Monserrate was arrested by Crime Branch for allegedly raping a minor girl at Taleigao. He is also accused of human trafficking.
A huge crowd of Monserrate supporters had gathered inside the court hall and others stayed outside awaiting the order. Once the bail was pronounced by District Session Judge Pramod Kamat, supporters outside the court shouted slogans in favour of Monserrate.
While leaving the court Monserrate said that at the right time he will expose the people who have framed him. “I will expose the people who are behind this. I am out on bail right now. I want to get cleared of the charges first. I will expose them at right time,” Monserrate said.
The St Cruz MLA said people have bestowed their faith in him by electing him to the Legislative Assembly and he will not betray their trust.
“I have been fixed and framed,” Monserrate told reporters outside the court before entering his vehicle and driving to Mahalaxmi Temple where he sought blessings before heading home. Several supporters were present at the temple and he was accompanied by his wife Jennifer who is the Taleigao MLA.
Supporters talking to Herald said it is a symbolic blessing which Monserrate decided to take, indirectly hinting that Monserrate was willing to extend his political ambitions to Panjim constituency as Parrikar also sought blessing from the same temple before starting his campaign in Panjim. From Mahalaxmi temple, Monserrate drove to the chapel at Miramar and then headed home.
Monserrate was arrested on May 5 by Crime Branch and was in police custody since then.
