‘2017 polls will be referendum on medium of instruction’

PANAJI: The upcoming state assembly election, scheduled for early 2017, will be a referendum on the medium of instruction (MoI) issue and will gauge the strengths and popularity of those supporting grants to English medium primary schools and those opposed to these grants, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said.

Addressing reporters at Candolim on Saturday morning, he said, "Let us test our respective stands. If the BJP comes back to power, it will take the necessary steps in the first assembly session after the election to pass a legislation making grants to English medium primary schools a part of the law. In the last assembly election, we had promised to find an amicable solution to the MoI issue and we came out with an amicable solution. All those who are raising their voices against the grants to English medium schools will be shown their place."
Referring to the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch's (BBSM) decision to float a political party, the Calangute MLA said, "I feel political parties should refrain from interfering with education. The BBSM agitation is nothing but a ploy to divide the people of Goa on the lines of religion and language. Parents should decide what is good for their children. If you want to send your children to a Marathi medium school, you can do it as such schools are available. Those who want to send their children to English medium schools should also be allowed to do so. Do not spoil the future of our children. We have to look forward, not backward. The BBSM is looking backward."
